Semester Fellowships ($900)

Semester Fellowships are a great way to get started on a project that could lead to a larger one like a summer project or a thesis

Expectations:

  • Students are expected to work several hours a week for a whole semester (~4 hours per week for 15 weeks) on their project. They will be paid $900 for this work.
  • In consultation with their mentor, students will engage in a 1 semester research project that meets NASA's goals. Examples of acceptable courses include:
    • BIOL 396: Research Problems in Physics
    • CHEM 390: Research Problems in Chemistry
    • PHYS 396: Research Problems in Physics
    • Any semester long honors thesis section
    • Note: at this time, semester grants cannot be used for a project embedded in an existing course.
  • Students will meet with their mentor each week.
  • Students are required to write a final project report for the MA Space Grant Consortium, and be willing to stay in touch with the organization so they can track their progress.
  • Students are expected to present at the Midyear symposium in the fall or the StARS event in the spring.
  • Student pay will be mailed at the end of the semester and after the project report has been submitted.

Spring 2024 Deadline is Friday, January 26 (we will approve late adds!)

So how do you apply for a semester fellowship? Follow these easy steps.

STEP 1: Find a project and a mentor - not necessarily in that order!

Need ideas? Perhaps you can approach a favorite professor or staff member and ask if they have any ideas. Or, if you have an idea and can't think of a mentor, reach out to the appropriate department chair - they may be able to make a connection for you.

STEP 2: Complete a Semester Fellowship form

Semester Fellowship form - a short form that also asks for an unofficial transcript

STEP 3: Complete both a BSU MA Space Grant Applicant form AND an MIT MA Space Grant Applicant Form by January 26, 2024

BSU MASGC form - required for all applicants

MIT MASGC form - required for all applicants

STEP 4: Have your mentor...

...send an email to j3winters@bridgew.edu to indicate support and acknowledgement of the project.

Decision making process: All applications will be reviewed and ranked by all mentor faculty, BSU Space Grant coordinators, and the BCoSM Deans.
