Apply to join a team of students using BSU's astronomical observatory to make observations of research and astrophotography targets. The data collected can be used by students at all levels for projects - from First Year Seminars to Honors Theses. Typical targets include variable stars, exoplanets, supernovae, and asteroids. Students work in teams to make observations on clear nights and earn $16/hour while they do so! So far, BEAR Team has produced over a terabyte of data and is in the process of making that data available to the public.
Fall 2024 Deadline is Friday, October 4th - though late applications may be considered.
Expectations:
On BEAR team you:
- Use the research telescope in the dome to image targets of astrophysical interest. In the past, we have produced data for BSU students to study exoplanets, type Ia supernovae, asteroids, variable stars, and quasars.
- Calibrate images to remove as much systematic error as possible (you take the calibration images needed to do this, too).
- Develop familiarity with imaging procedures for various types of targets, preparing you to plan your own research projects.
- Typically begin working 30-45 minutes before sunset and continue until the night's imaging task is complete (this varies widely, but most of the time it's not later than 2 am).
- Typically work in pairs, though it's not required.
- Only work when the weather is clear enough (usually when we expect less than 30% cloud coverage).
- Will be paid at the end of the semester
