We are close to the end of the semester now ...

Anyway.
We will be meeting on WEDNESDAY this week, as we are having a guest speaker coming to take about his work. Please join us in DMF 180 at 5pm to listen to Dr. Mikheil ELashvili from the BSU Math Department! He is a colleague of Dr. Brandon's and they went to Georgia (the country) to study how climate change altered the environment using sediment samples. I've added his title and abstract below.
Reconstructing the Earth: Environmental Change and Geoarchives in the South Caucasus
Dr. Mikheil Elashvili
Bridgewater State University, MA & Ilia State University (Republic of Georgia)
The South Caucasus, though geographically compact, is remarkably diverse in its geology, geomorphology, and landscapes. Environmental changes across the region are reflected in dynamic features such as sea-level fluctuations and coastal transformation along the Black Sea, glacier retreat in the Greater Caucasus, and shifts in the hydrological cycle and increasing aridification in eastern Georgia.
At the same time, the region holds rich geoarchives, including ice cores, lake sediments, and peat bogs, which preserve valuable records of paleoenvironments through indicators such as sediment composition, stable isotopes, pollutants, microfossils, and anthropogenic proxies.
This presentation provides an overview of paleoenvironmental reconstruction studies in the South Caucasus, mainly focusing on the Holocene but going beyond it. It also highlights student-led research emerging from the SIMuR (Shiraki International Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research) and the Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research project.
Can't wait to see you there!
Best wishes,
