Residence Life and Housing Information

RLH Terms

If your student is going to live on campus, it will help to know a few common acronyms:

RLH= Residence Life and Housing
RLH is the office that manages all aspects of on-campus housing.

RA= Resident Assistants
RAs live on each floor of every residence hall and are there to help any residents who have questions or need assistance. The RA is an undergraduate student who will be a great resource and can point your student in the right direction no matter what question they may have.

Each night from 7p.m. - 12 a.m., RAs serve active duty in the RA office (located right off each hall’s lobby). RAs also conduct walking rounds of the residence halls during their duty shift, visiting with students, checking security, and performing other administrative tasks.

RD= Resident Director
Each hall has a full-time Resident Director who supervises the RA staff and manages the day-to-day operations and activities of the hall.

AC= Area Coordinator
Area Coordinators supervise RDs and are responsible for overseeing two or more residence halls.

RLH FAQs

As a parent and family member, what does my student need to be successful living on-campus?
Parents and families should visit this information page, which includes useful advice and resources. You can also call the Housing Office at 508.531.1277.

When will my student find out their room assignment?
If they are a new student, they will select their housing assignment in late-June.

What residence hall will my student be living in?
While first-year students can be assigned to any residence hall, they are traditionally housed in Shea, Durgin, Scott, Pope, and Woodward halls. To view more information on available residence halls, click here.

What is the Residence Hall License Agreement?
Your student's first step is submitting a housing deposit. Step Two is completing the Residence Hall License Agreement, which can be found in their MyHousing account.

Because it contains policies and expectations for resident students, your student should read the entire Residence Hall License Agreement (RHLA).

By signing the license agreement, they are agreeing to the terms outlined therein.

Your student will also select a meal plan while completing the license agreement.

Can my student request a specific roommate?
Yes, as long as they are in the same room selection process, your student may request a specific roommate by forming a roommate group together.

How much does it cost to live on campus?
Housing Costs are detailed on this webpage. Note that all students living in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan. (Apartments residents are not required to have a meal plan.)

BSU residents are also required to pay a ResNet fee and a Resident Student Activity Fee each semester. To view a complete list of fees and the refund policy, refer to the current student handbook.

My student has never shared a room before or lived away from home – what advice do you have for them?
Transitioning to college and sharing space with someone new is a common challenge new students will face. Not only do we have trained staff – RAs, RDs and ACs – who can help, but we encourage all students to review these useful tips and resources for living successfully in the residence halls.
