Alternative Break Program
The Alternative Break program at Bridgewater State University is a transformative group experience that engages students in social justice education, direct community service, civic engagement, and critical reflection.
Alternative Break prepares students to contribute to positive social change and builds their abilities to address social issues in their own communities. This experience will enrich your self-awareness, develop your connections with others and broaden your community perspectives.
Community Service
The MRISJ encourages the BSU community to become life-long engaged participants in our regional, national and global communities. We provide students with a variety of volunteer and community engagement opportunities in the Southeastern Massachusetts area and beyond including local service projects and annual days of service. Transportation is provided to all of our off-campus service projects.
Civic Engagement
Civic Engagement at BSU provides students with tools, workshops, and resources to be actively involved in the community. The MRISJ hosts speakers, panels, and discussions about critical issues affecting our society and promotes healthy dialogue about matters that impact our community.
BSU Votes is a collection of resources to help voters navigate local and federal elections. Find out more about how to register in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well as how to vote by mail, how to research candidates and issues, and how to engage with your community beyond election cycles.
Justice Fellows
The Justice Fellow program pairs undergraduate students with a nonprofit organization or campus-based initiative for a community-based learning experience that engages students in positive social change work. The Justice Fellow program allows community organizations to gain direct service and capacity-building support, while providing learning opportunities for undergraduate students.
The Justice Fellows are paid student employees who commit to work 10-14 hours per week throughout the academic year. An MRISJ staff member serves as a campus advisor to provide guidance to Justice Fellows to support their community work and increase their understanding of social justice, community engagement and social change. Justice Fellows meet regularly as a cohort to integrate issue specific education and reflection into their experience. Justice Fellows are part of a community of passionate students and are given opportunities to attend workshops intended to build social justice knowledge and skills.
