Learning Assistance

Learning Assistance in the AAC is made up of two types of support: Academic Coaching and Tutoring. Many students take advantage of Academic Coaching and Tutoring to support their success at BSU.

Academic Coaching

BSU's Academic Coaching service centers on building collaborative relationships with students to provide a platform for examining and meeting individual learning needs, while facilitating the process of autonomy and self-advocacy at the university level. Academic coaches and students work together to develop skills that prepare students to be college-ready learners. These skills include but are not limited to goal setting & motivation, learning/study strategies, organization & prioritization, professional academic communication, research & library navigation, stress management, test preparation/test-taking/test anxiety, and time/task management. Coaches work one-on-one with students throughout the semester and can tailor each session to the needs of the student.

Tutoring Areas Include:

Accounting and Finance Lab:
If your student needs assistance with accounting or finance courses (ACFI 100 through ACFI 385), we have advanced student tutors in the Accounting and Finance Lab to help them.

Math and Statistics Support:
The peer tutors in Math Services are available to your student for help in Developmental Math (MATH 090 and 095) through Statistics and Calculus courses.

Writing Support:
The Writing Studio provides your student with feedback in brainstorming, developing, organizing, and writing papers in any of their classes.

Multilingual Students:
Many of our students speak two or more languages. Tutoring for Multilingual Students provides tutoring for studying in English, such as reading textbooks, writing, and giving oral presentations.

Tutoring for 100/200 Intro and Core Curriculum Classes
Tutors are available to help with some common courses like CRIT 111 (formerly PHIL 111) as well as 100/200 level intro courses in the sciences and social sciences.

CLEP Tests

What is CLEP?
CLEP stands for The College-Level Examination Program, and is a standardized, college credit-granting exam program maintained by The College Board.

What can CLEP do for my student?
By taking and passing certain subject exams, your student can receive automatic credits for those BSU courses because they have demonstrated their proficiency in that subject by their test score.
